HanziLookup is a browser extension that shows the pinyin, meaning and example sentences of a Chinese word when you hover it on a web page. This policy explains what data the extension handles.
HanziLookup does not collect, store, sell or share any personal data. It has no server, no account and no analytics.
To find the word under your mouse, the extension reads the text of the page you are viewing. This happens only inside your browser: the word is looked up in a dictionary bundled with the extension. Page content and your browsing history are never sent anywhere.
Your preferences (lookup on/off, dictionary language, modifier key, display options, voice and speech speed) are saved with chrome.storage.sync. If you are signed in to your browser with sync turned on, the browser syncs these settings between your own devices. The developer cannot see them.
When you ask the extension to read a word or sentence aloud, it uses your browser's built-in speech engine. If the chosen voice is an online voice (for example "Google 普通话" in Chrome), the browser sends the text being spoken to that voice provider to produce the audio, under the provider's own privacy policy. HanziLookup does not send this text itself. To keep everything on your device, pick a local voice in the extension's settings.
No data is transferred to third parties, except the speech case described above, which is handled by your browser.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date.
